The Humane Society of the United States recommends that you do not transport your pet by air unless absolutely necessary as it can be stressful for your animals health and well being. If you must transport your pets or animals by air, your first decision is whether you can take your loving pet in the aircraft cabin with you, which is always the best option. If your pet is a cat or small dog then in most cases the airlines will allow you to take the animal on board for an additional transport fee.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) allows each individual airline to decide if they will allow you to travel with your pets in the passenger cabin of the airplae and under what conditions they will or will not allow someone to travel with a pet. If a commercial airline does allow you to bring your pet into the cabin, your airline certified pet container is legally considered to be carry-on baggage. Your pets airline container must be small enough to fit underneath the seat (generally about 10x15x20 inches and weighing less than 40 pounds). To find out about this option, call the airline well in advance of your scheduled flight, because there are limits to the number of animals allowed in the cabin area for each flight.
Another option available for pet owners not willing to brave the experience of flying commercially with an animal companion is flying on a chartered plane. Many charter services allow pets or animals, regardless of the animals size, to fly in the cabin as passengers close to their respective owners in a safer and more controlled environment that will be less stressful on the animal and pet owner.
Always verify with the airlines your flight plans when travelling with pets and be sure that your pet is ready at the time of the flight by scheduling feeding times and play times before and after the flight travel times. Take a few precautionary steps and make the next trip with your animal the best one ever.
